Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)
28 "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest.
29 Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
30 Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."
In the course of living, there is an inevitable drift into weariness. The things we encounter can weigh on the soul, draining strength and dulling the desire to move forward in what is required. When those burdens are carried continually, the heart can become so troubled that it teeters on the edge of despair.
Jesus speaks directly to this condition with His invitation to come to Him. He promises that, in His presence, rest is found—a release from what is ill-fitting, excessive, or too heavy to bear. Yet His invitation also carries an implication: coming to Him requires leaving something else behind. The place we depart from is crowded with burdens, and the things that dominate there cannot be carried into His rest.
To come to Him, those excessive weights must be laid down. His rest is not found by adding Him to our burdens, but by choosing Him over the pursuits and cares that exhaust the soul. What He offers must be preferred above every competing desire.
