Ephesians 3:16-20 (NLT)
16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.
17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.
18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.
19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
20 Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.
There was a young boy who had just moved into a new neighborhood with his mother and sister. They had not yet met many people, except for a friendly older man who welcomed them when they first arrived. With a new fence around the backyard, the boy was allowed to play outside, where he gathered scrap pieces of wood and decided to build a doghouse for his faithful best friend.
Not knowing where to begin and without any tools, he quickly realized he was in over his head. A few days later, while at the grocery store with his family, they ran into the same friendly man. When asked how he was enjoying the new home, the boy excitedly told him about his dog and the house he was trying to build. Innocently, he asked if the man knew anything about building and whether he might help him get it started.
What the boy did not know was that this kind man was not only friendly — he was the owner of the neighborhood construction company. Instead of offering a few tips or lending a hammer, the man brought over proper tools, quality materials, and even helped design and build a sturdy, weather-proof doghouse far better than the boy could have imagined. What began as a simple request for help resulted in a gift far beyond what the boy had asked for or expected.
When we come to God with limited understanding and simple requests, we are speaking to One whose resources, wisdom, and power far exceed our imagination. God is not limited to answering only what we can articulate or conceive. He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us. He loves when our requests in prayer allow Him to show up with so much more than we had in mind to overwhelm with His way more than enough.
Our role is not to figure out how He will do it, but to trust Him enough to ask, to draw near, and to believe that His response will always be greater, wiser, and more complete than anything we could ever come up with on our own.
