2 Corinthians 3:14-17 (NLT)
14 But the people’s minds were hardened, and to this day whenever the old covenant is being read, the same veil covers their minds so they cannot understand the truth. And this veil can be removed only by believing in Christ.
15 Yes, even today when they read Moses’ writings, their hearts are covered with that veil, and they do not understand.
16 But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Built into our flesh is the need to believe that what is right in our lives comes from our own effort — a kind of DIY syndrome. It even inspired the popular Frank Sinatra song, “My Way.” We subtly assume that doing things our way is somehow better and worth resisting the urge to seek help. This shows up in music and other fields when people proudly claim to be self-taught. While initiative and perseverance are noble, it is often far more enabling to submit to the instruction of someone who already possesses the knowledge. Time and energy are saved, bad habits avoided, and excellence gained when we let go of a DIY heart and humbly learn from a master.
The children of Israel had the writings of Moses, yet the extensive demands of the law reinforced the idea that righteousness depended on their own performance. Though a few, like David, discovered relationship with God, many treated the law as a DIY manual and never found their way to His heart. What was available to them all along remained hidden because they did not turn to the Lord. In Christ, however, this veil of self-reliance is removed. By simply turning to Him as Master and Lord, what was exhausting and impossible on our own becomes free and alive in Him. Letting go of the urge to achieve righteousness independently opens the way to a life of righteousness never before possible.
What once seemed difficult to understand or walk out becomes clear as we choose the presence of the Lord over independence. As the heart softens in His presence, what could not be seen is made plain — not by our effort, but by abiding with Him.
